There is something about late autumn that asks us to slow down. The evenings deepen, the garden grows quieter, and the world begins trading its bright colors for a softer kind of beauty.
Samhain, often pronounced “SOW-in,” is a Gaelic seasonal festival traditionally associated with the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Observed around October 31 into November 1, it holds special meaning for many modern pagans and witches as a time of remembrance, reflection, and turning inward. Traditions vary, and not everyone observes it in the same way.
To me, this season offers a gentle invitation: remember what you love, give thanks for what has sustained you, and consider what you are ready to put down.
You do not have to follow a particular spiritual path to find meaning in those things.
A little space for remembrance 🍂
As the days grow shorter, we might find ourselves thinking about people and animals we miss, family traditions, or the places that helped shape us.
Remembrance does not have to be elaborate. Make a favorite family recipe. Look through old photographs. Tell a story about someone whose laugh you still remember. Let the memory be tender, funny, imperfect, or all three.
Letting the garden rest
A garden cannot bloom every day of the year. Neither can we.
This can be a lovely time to write down something you are ready to release: an expectation, an overfull schedule, or the idea that rest must always be earned. You do not need a dramatic ritual. Sometimes a quiet decision and one small change are enough.
What slowing down looks like in my home 🧡
For me, slowing down means being with my family and making room for cozy nights together. It means pumpkin spice everything, because yes, I am absolutely that person, and a warm cup of tea while a Hallmark movie plays.
It’s getting the sweaters out and loading the couch with throw blankets. There may technically be enough blankets already, but I’m not interested in testing that theory.
And it’s football games with my son. We are a huge Bears fan family, so there’s plenty of cheering mixed in with all that autumn coziness. Bear Down! 🐻🏈
Those moments remind me that turning inward does not have to mean being alone or sitting in perfect silence. Sometimes it means drawing your people closer, putting your phone down, and letting an ordinary evening be enough.
That is what I want to carry into the quieter months: more time together, more warmth, and fewer reasons to rush.
A simple autumn moment 🕯️
Set aside a few minutes with a warm drink, a favorite stone, or an autumn leaf gathered on a walk. A crystal can be a personal symbol or simply something beautiful to hold. There is no required stone, purchase, or perfect way to begin.
Ask yourself:
- What am I grateful for?
- What do I want to carry into winter?
- What can I leave behind?
Whether you observe Samhain, celebrate another tradition, or simply enjoy these golden autumn days, there is room for you here.
May this season offer a little space to remember, to breathe, and to be exactly where you are.
